She's a flip-flopper...

Today's buffoon is Rep. Joan Nass (R-District 144). Here's an excerpt from an interview leading up to the 2004 elections which included the Representative:

"Q: Gov. John Baldacci said he will introduce legislation in 2005 to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. Please explain why you would support or oppose such a bill.

Nass: There should be no discrimination, period."

That's interesting, because she sided with the only subtly homophobic position of the state GOP establishment that it should go to the voters, then, again in spite of the above quote, she voted against the bill. Apparently she actually supported LD 1196, before she opposed it.

What Rep. Nass fails to realize is that the gay rights debate is not about whether it should go to referendum, or gay marriage, or transgender dress codes, it's about what John Griffin meant in his book Black Like Me when he wrote:

"...For so long as we condone injustice by a small but powerful group, we condone the destruction of all social stability, all real peace, all trust in man's good intentions toward his fellow man."

I think that Nathan is right to say that the Senator is a buffoon. Someone who condones and legitimizes discrimination is far worse - they are no different than those who condoned any of the injustices of the past. The reality is she voted for discrimination - and she needs to be held accountable. That is the price you pay for public service and you need to deal with it. Do you think the AMG crowd is fair when they call Baldacci a "meatball"? Again, hypocrites.

I am sure that the wing nuts who post there feel negatively about anything that opposes their viewpoint. They are hardened partisans, and care nothing for good public policy. The Colt 45 gun totin' mentality that permeates that site reeks of the malevolence that conservatives harbor for anyone who disagrees with them.

Do you condone the vicious posts on AMG? You don't seem to want to deal with that issue. Do you think its fair game to cal Baldacci a meatball when you have a problem with the term baffoon?

If you guys are wondering where all your comments went, I deleted them because this discussion, as nice as it was due to all the pats on the back I got, was, from the start, wayyyyyyy off topic from the original post. This comments section is supposed to be about Joan Nass' inconsistency over gay rights, not about AMG. Also, I was getting tired of the insult that kept popping up every time I loaded the comments thread.
