Not sure what to say here except...

Welcome to the first entry of West York County Politics, a liberal blog highlighting the buffoonery of the local conservative legislators in western and central York County, Maine. I'll start this with profiles of some of the local buffoons, the first being State Sen. Jon Courtney (R-Senate District 3), some of the bills he has sponsored or cosponsored are:

LD 1501
An Act To *cough* Prevent Domestic Abuse *cough* by Reinstating the Death Penalty for Persons Who Murder Family or Household Members

LD 87
An Act To Phase Out the Corporate Income Tax over a 5-year Period (Cosponsor)

LD 147
RESOLUTION, Proposing an Amendment to the Constitution of Maine To Revoke the Voting Privileges of Persons Convicted of Certain Crimes (Sponsor)

LD 150
RESOLUTION, Proposing an Amendment to the Constitution of Maine To Require a 2/3 Vote of the Legislature To Enact or Increase a Tax (Cosponsor)

LD 270
An Act To Prohibit Same-day Voter Registration (Sponsor)

LD 436
An Act To Eliminate Estate Taxes on Family-owned Businesses (Cosponsor)

LD 632
An Act To Lower the Tax Burden for Small Businesses (Cosponsor) (Anyone interested can attend the work session on April 6, 1pm, Room 127 at the State House)

Speaking of conservation buffoons, what do you think of Farmington's latest newcomer, J. Frary?

Correct that to "CONSERVATIVE"

Geez...whacky conservative? The guy voted for LD 1 which puts millions into Sanford schools.

Aren't we for lower taxes for small biz? It seems to me that we spend all of our state tax dollars propping up BIW and Wal-Mart. I'd rather cut some slack for the local pizza shop than giving away tax dollars to BIW.

tardus: My point is that Courtney's obsession with tax cuts is not the kind of attitude we need in Augusta when we're just barely managing to pass a semi-decent budget.

mpr: I checked the legislator listing on the state website, and haven't found J. Frary. The only people there are Janet Mills and Chandler Woodcock

I believe he's reffering to John Frary, the new columnist for the Morning Sentinel / Kennebec Journal.

I don't know why he's asking about that on a York County blog though.

The proposed state budget includes borrowing $447 million dollars to pay for current expenses over the next two years, as well as leveraging our future lottery earnings.

Let's say one of your parents gets laid off, and their income is cut in half. Instead of cutting expenses around the house, they get a high-interest credit card, and use that to pay for the mortgage, groceries, car payments, and utility bills for two years, same as always.

They don't have the money to even pay the interest, let alone the principal. What do you think happens at the end of two years? Do you have a house or car, or has the bank repossessed everything?

Would you call them financially irresponsible for living this way?

That's PRECISELY what the state is proposing to do by borrowing $447 million dollars to keep the lights on, and not cutting spending instead.

Do you think it's fiscally responsible to borrow money that you can't repay except by taxing everything that moves, including canoes and birdwatching? No joke - those were proposed this session, by some other legislators you're forgetting to mention.

Still waiting for a response from any of you ... what have you to say about the proposed state budget, complete with $5 burn permits, fines up to $200 for not wearing a seatbelt (per person in the vehicle), and 4% taxes on your health insurance premiums (to fund retirement benefits for state employees).

Those are just SOME of the new taxes and fees you can look forward to in the coming fiscal year.

As for John Frary, surely you've heard of cynical humor. His pieces are beautifully crafted, and if you read them with a sense of humor, you might enjoy them more.

Isn't it fiscally irresponsible to try to push through all the tax cuts that Courtney has either introduced or cosponsored?

How about you answer my question first, or post a response on the TABOR thread. Then I'll answer your question.

oh no no no no no, I know the game you're trying to play, this is my blog, and I get to frame the debate: Isn't it fiscally irresponsible to try to push through all the tax cuts that Courtney has either introduced or cosponsored?
